See what our students enjoyed the most from their 2025 VSP experience

Attending the UBC Vancouver Summer Program in Seniors’ Health & Home Care has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my nursing journey. When I first encountered a fall machine in a Canadian nursing home, I was perplexed. Back home, much emphasis is placed on preventing such incidents through cot sides, alarms, and close monitoring. Yet in Canada, I learned this was not a lapse in care, but a deliberate philosophy: a commitment to giving residents the autonomy they value, even if it comes with certain risks. This was a powerful lesson for me. I saw how Canadian homes trust residents to make choices – whether venturing out unsupervised, joining in activities like gardening, or decorating their rooms with personal belongings – while staff innovate to balance safety and freedom. From tracker bracelets to vigilant supervision, every safeguard respected dignity while preserving independence. Through this program, I understood that nursing is not just about safety – it is also about autonomy, trust, and dignity. The Canadian approach challenged me to think beyond existing safety parameters and to consider how innovation and flexibility can maximise both autonomy and safety for residents. Beyond the classroom, I was touched by the thoughtfulness of our student buddies. They went above and beyond to help us settle in, patiently guiding us through campus life and always being ready with a smile. Their warmth and enthusiasm made our experience not only smoother but also so much more enjoyable. We were also given many opportunities to explore the beauty of Vancouver – from the vibrant waterfront at Granville Island, to the breathtaking scenery at Lynn Canyon, and even cozy music nights. These experiences deepened our appreciation of Canadian culture and gave us memories that extended far beyond the classroom. More than an exciting summer, however, this program has broadened my perspective and strengthened my commitment to seeking creative, meaningful ways to care for residents in Singapore and beyond.

I am Adilah, a Singapore student from National University Singapore (NUS), a year 4 honour student. The one-month summer programme in Vancouver was an incredible and eye-opening experience. It was amazing to immerse myself in another country’s culture and learn alongside passionate lecturers who shared their knowledge with rigor and enthusiasm. I felt genuinely welcomed, with student ambassadors always ready to assist, and had the joy of making international friendships that I will treasure forever. Being able to experience life in another country, gain new perspectives, and explore different pathways to advance my nursing career was truly invaluable. I am deeply grateful to have been part of this programme, which has inspired me both personally and professionally.
